AUDITIONS

CHALLENGING BROWN Audition Call



New Views Theatre is auditioning for two developmental readings of:


CHALLENGING BROWN, by Cris Eli Blak,


Directed by Stephanie Sandberg,


at the Johnson Theatre in Washington and Lee University’s Lenfest Center in Lexington, Virginia.


Table reading and rehearsals are Friday, October 10.
Staged readings are Saturday, October 11 at 7:30pm and Sunday, October 12 at 3:00pm.

 

Actors will be paid $50 for the rehearsal day and $50 per performance.

SYNOPSIS


When Gordon Brown is unexpectedly hired as the first Black teacher in an all-white high school in 1967 Texas, his life becomes one challenge after another. He is forced to decide whether to be built-up or broken-down by the obstacles of a changing world, his personal relationships, and those who want to see him fail.

GORDON BROWN, Black male, 30s. Gordon talks about his father teaching him to tie ties and dress with dignity despite poverty.


DOLORES BROWN, Black female, mid-20s - 30s. Dolores explains why she wouldn't want to bring Black children into this world.


PRICE DENNIS, Black male, 30s. Price confesses about the boxing match he was supposed to lose and owing dangerous people money


VINCENT ADAMS, white male, 30s - 50s. Vincent's 'welcome' speech threatening Gordon to teach only 'real history' and stay in line.


JOJO LITTLE, Black male, 17. Jojo questions Gordon about hope, pain, and who's really in control.


BETTY ADAMS, white female, 30s - 50s. Betty talks about preparing for their first Black dinner guests and what music to play.


STAGE DIRECTIONS, any gender, any age. The actor will read any stage directions that the director wants the audience to hear (there’s no side for this).
